Mastercardās Vocalink Appoints Sir Jon Thompson Chair

Vocalink has named Sir Jon Thompson as its new Independent Non-Executive Chair, underscoring a sharpened emphasis on governance and operational resilience at one of the UKās most vital financial infrastructure providers.
He takes over from Tim Murphy, who has held the role of Interim Executive Chair for the past 18 months.
Tim will continue to serve on the Board through to the end of July to ensure a smooth handover.
The decision follows an extensive recruitment process and arrives as Vocalink faces growing expectations to deliver resilient, always-on systems while advancing the UKās National Payments Vision.
Handling more than £30bn (US$40.2bn) in transactions each day, the company plays a central role in processing salaries, pensions and welfare payments across the UK economy.
Sir Jon says: āIām honoured to join Vocalink at an important time for UK payments.
āIt supports the UKās economy, providing the resilient, always-on payments infrastructure that millions of consumers, businesses and public services rely on every day.
āI look forward to working with the Board and the leadership team to continue to strengthen the critical services that Vocalink provides.
āThis is a world-class operation that continually draws on its expertise and innovation to help shape the future of UK retail payments infrastructure and protect against an evolving threat landscape.ā
Governance focus amid system importance
Sir Jonās arrival is set to reinforce the independence of Vocalinkās Board at a defining point in the companyās trajectory.
Operating as a systemically important payments provider, the business is deeply embedded in the UKās financial infrastructure, where expectations around resilience, compliance and risk controls remain exceptionally high.
Drawing on senior roles across government and regulatory bodies, he brings the experience needed to navigate a complex environment shaped by escalating cyber risks, shifting regulatory frameworks and ongoing demands for investment in critical infrastructure.
Tim adds: āIām delighted to welcome Sir Jon to Vocalink.
āHe brings the governance, regulatory and leadership experience needed to lead the Board through a strategically significant period for the business.
āThis appointment reflects the boardās commitment to strong independent oversight, operational resilience and reliable service for businesses and consumers across the UK.ā
Deep financial and public sector experience
Sir Jon brings a wealth of financial leadership and governance experience drawn from some of the UK’s most complex public sector institutions.
His career spans senior positions including Chief Executive of HM Revenue and Customs, leadership roles at the Financial Reporting Council and the Ministry of Defence, as well as serving as Chair of HS2 Ltd.
He currently holds the role of Independent Non-Executive Chair at Frasers Group.
Earlier in his career, he held a number of senior finance posts across government, including Director General of Finance at the Ministry of Defence and Director General of Corporate Services at the Department for Children, Schools and Families. He also led the Government Finance Profession at HM Treasury.
This breadth of experience is likely to prove valuable as Vocalink navigates the balance between day-to-day operational demands and longer-term investment priorities.
With payments infrastructure increasingly recognised as critical national infrastructure, strong financial discipline and robust governance will be essential to sustaining confidence among regulators, financial institutions and end users.
