Cloudflare launches new verified AI identities & wallets to help procurement teams enable secure autonomous purchasing and build trust in agentic commerce

As businesses seek safer methods for deploying agentic AI, web security is continuing to develop. Cloudflare has introduced new tools intended to provide AI agents with verified identities and the ability to complete transactions securely.

For procurement teams, Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay offer infrastructure that could strengthen security while supporting more autonomous purchasing processes.

Andrew O'Connor, Agentic AI Lead at PSE Consulting, reviewed Cloudflare’s announcement and explained how the technology could shape the future of agentic commerce.

Verified identities enable AI purchasing

Andrew says Cloudflare's latest launch signals that “agentic commerce is moving beyond experimentation and into implementation.”

He highlights several other organisations developing AI-enabled payment initiatives, including Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard's Agent Pay and Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2).

Cloudflare’s new tools address two central requirements: establishing digital identity and executing payments.

Each Cloudflare account receives a unique web address that functions as a permanent identity. This enables users to delegate authority to particular AI agents, while businesses receiving requests can confirm where that authorisation originated.

For stablecoin management, Cloudflare's Account Wallet provides a central balance for receiving, storing and managing funds. Users can also allocate Virtual Wallets to individual AI agents, enabling them to purchase online resources within specific permissions.

Combined, Cloudflare Wallets and digital identities establish the basis for a two-sided agentic payment ecosystem.

AI agents, merchants, payment providers and platforms all need to align around a common set of standards for identity, authentication, delegated authority and accountability.

Infrastructure will define agentic commerce

According to Andrew, the industry now needs to move beyond considering what AI agents can do and concentrate on the infrastructure required for safe, large-scale operation.

He explains that agentic commerce will “depend on building infrastructure that makes autonomous transactions as secure, transparent and reliable as tapping a contactless card.”

Cloudflare’s latest announcement comes after recent partnerships with publishers and AI platforms, including beehiiv, Ceramic.ai, Condé Nast and Patreon.

The company has also launched Web Bot Auth and AI Crawl Control to assist organisations deploying agentic AI. The tools are intended to verify AI bots, improve tracking, automate verification processes and provide organisations with greater control over web crawling.

Together, these developments demonstrate that autonomous procurement will require more than AI capabilities alone.

Trusted digital identities, secure payment infrastructure and standardised verification processes are emerging as the foundations for organisations seeking to deploy AI agents confidently across purchasing and supplier interactions.

Trust is adoption’s main challenge

Andrew believes that giving AI agents a consistent identity and transaction capabilities “addresses one of the biggest barriers to adoption.”

“For merchants, knowing an AI agent has been authenticated and is acting within a consumer's delegated permissions is essential if autonomous purchasing is to become a trusted part of everyday commerce,” Andrew continues.

“Without that confidence, businesses will continue to treat AI interactions as a risk, instead of embracing them as a powerful opportunity for growth and innovation.”

PYMNTS forecasts that agentic commerce could become a US$1.7tn market over the coming years. Nevertheless, fraud concerns and regulatory compliance remain obstacles to broader adoption, with both companies and consumers looking for increased confidence in autonomous transactions.

Andrew adds: “The next challenge is ensuring those trust signals extend consistently across the wider ecosystem.

“AI agents, merchants, payment providers and platforms all need to align around a common set of standards for identity, authentication, delegated authority and accountability.”
