Lloyds Banking Group has paired with the National Wealth Fund for a £500m retrofit boost aimed at UK universities, also aiming to support 4,000 jobs

In a joint announcement, major UK financial institution Lloyds Banking Group has paired with the National Wealth Fund to support a green initiative.

The projects will be delivered at scale, aiming to boost UK retrofit supply chains in addition to supporting the UK with its net zero goals.

Pledging the commitment “to unlock £500m (US$670m) of financing”, according to the bank, the funding will support the retrofit and decarbonisation of university estates across the UK.

Lloyds Banking Group will modernise up to 300 campus buildings under the agreement, with financing supporting a range of sustainable initiatives.

Universities will be supported as they invest in energy-efficiency upgrades and low-carbon heating across university campuses, reducing energy costs in the long term.

Buildings will be modernised as the initiative supports the reduction of emissions, and will benefit staff, students and researchers.

The cost: Human and financial

While Lloyds are promising up to £500m (US$670m) for UK universities, the National Wealth Fund is enabling up to £350m (US$469m) of financial guarantees for the project.

The upgrades to the university, alongside the benefits of lowering long-term energy costs, will also grow the UK’s retrofit capability, according to the group.

Up to 4,000 jobs ranging from specialist engineers to local contractors will be supported or created as the initiative supports the upgrading of complex university buildings.

The initiative will also strengthen the supply chain in the UK.

Oliver Holbourn, CEO of the National Wealth Fund (NWF), notes: “The UK’s universities are a significant national asset, acting as vital anchors for place-based growth by providing opportunity and driving innovation.

“By partnering with Lloyds, the NWF is helping bring university estates up to spec, enabling long-term affordable financing that will accelerate energy-efficiency upgrades and heat decarbonisation, all while boosting local supply chains and supporting skilled retrofit jobs.”

The university challenge and flexible financing

Lloyds will be able to offer longer-tenors in addition to flexible financing which allows retrofit projects such as this one to be viable.

Retrofitting can be particularly challenging without access to long-term flexible finance, as some universities have estates that are not only diverse, but also contain historic institutions.

Lloyds also note that universities, as they represent a “hard-to-abate” part of higher education infrastructure, face an estimated decarbonisation cost of £8.8bn (US$11.8bn) associated with their built environment.

Amanda Murphy, CEO, Business & Commercial Banking at Lloyds Banking Group explains: “Universities play a vital role in driving growth and innovation across the UK, but many face challenges in funding the significant upfront investment required to decarbonise large complex estates.

“Through our partnership with the NWF, we’re unlocking targeted funding to help accelerate the decarbonisation of university estates, supporting investment and strengthening global competitiveness.

“Our world-class universities make a significant contribution to the UK economy, and this investment will help ensure they remain well positioned for the future.”

The partnership builds on a pre-existing partnership between Lloyds and the NWF that sees the bank commit up to £500m for the support of registered providers retrofitting social homes.

Supporting this initiative with £450m of financial guarantees is the NWF, which has to date provided more than £1.6m in financial guarantees for the rollout of retrofit projects across the built environment.
