Citi Reaches US$647bn in Sustainable Finance Progress
Citi operates in more than 180 countries with US$2.8tn in assets.
The bank specialises in investment banking, corporate banking and sustainable finance mobilisation.
The institution has published its 2025 Sustainability Report, detailing how it integrates financial solutions, performance metrics and risk management for economic growth.
Operational footprint targets
According to the report, Citi has met six out of eight 2025 operational footprint goals. The bank achieved a 58% reduction in location-based greenhouse gas emissions, exceeding its 45% target.
Energy consumption fell by 43%. The bank maintained 100% renewable electricity sourcing across its operations.
Between 2021 and 2025, Citi installed on-site renewables at 17 locations. Plans are in place to expand to more sites.
The bank has developed energy efficiency approaches and programmes for new and renovated facilities. These include heat pumps, window upgrades and improved building systems controls.
Citi missed its targets for reclaimed water usage and waste landfill diversion. According to the bank, municipal infrastructure constraints prevented it from meeting these goals.
Jane Fraser, Chair and CEO at Citi, says: "A new world order is emerging. Repeated geopolitical shocks have reshaped the global landscape. Governments are taking a more aggressive role in shaping markets and industries.
"Clients tell us that amidst the new global dynamics, building resilience into their business models is no longer a defensive tactic; it is a competitive necessity.
"In this context, Citi's role as a source of stability and strength for both our clients and the broader system has renewed urgency."
Sustainable finance activity
Citi has made progress towards its 2030 US$1tn sustainable finance goal, financing and facilitating US$647.2bn. The bank contributed US$91.3bn in 2025 alone.
According to Citi, financed activities since 2020 have helped avoid an estimated 8.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. These activities supported more than 4.4 million jobs globally.
The bank focuses on financing affordable housing for residents in urban and suburban areas with low and moderate income. Citi offers finance solutions to help affordable housing developers construct, rehabilitate, refinance and acquire affordable multifamily housing across the US.
According to Affordable Housing Finance, the bank has been named the number one affordable housing lender in the US for the 16th consecutive year. Citi released its Sustainable Finance Framework and Sustainable Issuance Framework during the year.
Valerie Smith, Chief Sustainability Officer at Citi, writes on LinkedIn: "Citi's 2025 Sustainability Report provides a comprehensive update into the progress that our company and Citi Foundation have made toward our sustainability commitments.
"As we reach the halfway point to 2030, we have financed and facilitated more than US$647bn in sustainable finance activity, putting us more than halfway toward our US$1tn sustainable finance goal.
"The report also presents a final progress update on our 2025 operational footprint goals and introduces two new 2030 operational footprint goals to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption."
Community investment programmes
In 2025, Citi reached the five-year milestone of the Citi Impact Fund, which invests in companies that are advancing community solutions across the US. This aims to complement Citi's philanthropy and other community investing efforts.
According to the bank, the Citi Impact Fund has invested in 56 companies as of December 2025. It has allocated more than US$200m in capital.

It distributed more than US$53m in grants in 2025. This includes US$25m for youth employability initiatives.
